LGBTQ Parent Support San Rafael CA Vicinity

By Frank Evans

Originally founded in 1972 by a mother with a gay son, PFLAG has become one of the most important and vital organizations in the LGBTQ+ community. For, the number of lives which the organization and chapters such as the LGBTQ Parent support San Rafael CA has touched and saved over the years are astounding. As the organization has been so successful in the United States, it has now gained a number of International friends and allies.

The current vision of the organization is the same as it has always been, to envision a world in which all aspects of diversity are celebrated while accepting others regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation or gender expression. For, while progress has been made in some of these areas, there are still those whom are trying to repeal laws which protect LGBTQ+ community members at home, work and play. As such, the mission to help create a world in which all people love and respect others regardless of difference still remains a viable and challenging goal.

In most cases, the organization works to assist allies, friends and families by providing support groups in which these individuals can share biases, difficulties, ideas and personal experiences with others. Whereas, the organization also works to promote the safety of individuals in the LGBT+ community whom have been kicked out of homes, rental units or whom have been discriminated against in other ways.

With over 400 chapters now providing peer-to-peer counseling and parental support, education and advocacy, PFLAG continues to play a vital and important role in the LGBTQ+ community. In most cases, there is at least one support group or chapter in urban or near rural areas.

Since 1972, the organization has been changing hearts, minds, saving and strengthening lives through a variety of support groups which promote acceptance and equality. For, the peer-to-peer support groups in which individuals are having a difficult time offer the ability to network with like-minded individuals. Whereas, locating housing for LGBTQ+ individuals whom have been kicked out of family homes, or faced discrimination by others has also provided support at times when none other was available.

While the group is most visible during Pride month, which in the United States is June, work goes well beyond marching in a parade. For, the group also advocates for full equality of those in the community at the federal, state and local level on an ongoing basis. For, only when all people are treated equally in housing, work, play and public can anyone be truly equal in the sight of others.

While the group has played a vital role in the community for years, that need has only continued to grow. For, the number of conversion therapists which are now attempting to cure the "gayness, " out of individuals has also grown, especially in more conservative areas. While some states have now banned this type of counseling, others are only continuing to promote and support what many believe to be one of the most discriminatory practices involving the LGBTQ+ community.

While PLFAG has always played a vital role in the overall community at large, there is still more work to be done. In fact, the need for the organization has grown even stronger over the last several decades. One other reason the work is so important now more than ever is due to the right wing religious zealots which are attempting to overturn new laws protecting the civil and legal rights of those in the LGBTQ+ community.
