Understanding Los Angeles Metalizing Business

By Shawn Hunter

Metalizing is the collective term that refers to processes through which metals are applied on other surfaces. The first instance of the process happened in 1835 and was used to make mirrors. The person credited for the discovery is Justus Von Liebig. Metalizing can be performed for functional, decorative, or protective purposes. Los Angeles metalizing businesses can achieve all the three purposes.

There are many versions of metalizing in use today. Manufacturers have continued to research new methods and with the assistance of new technology, they have managed to come up with several versions. The process can be done on any kind of material ranging from plastic, metal, and glass to wood. Due to the difference in the nature of the various materials, the choice of version to use may differ.

The results achieved depend on the version in use and the nature of surfaces being coated. The metal used for coating may also determine the final outcome. Many metals have been used in this process but aluminum remains the dominant one because of several reasons. First, aluminum has a low boiling point, which reduces the amount of energy required for the process. Secondly, aluminum is a shiny metal and produces shiny coatings which improve the aesthetic qualities of a substrate.

The process happens inside a vacuum chamber at temperatures slightly above the boiling point of the metal being used to coat another surface. As the boiling temperature of the metal is reached, the metal evaporates to form fumes which then cool off and settle on the substrate. Substrate is a term used to refer to the object being metalized. The fumes form a thin uniformly distributed film over the substrate.

A substrate being worked on may be hot or cold depending on what version of metalizing is in use. The essence of warming in certain cases is to strengthen the bond between substrates and metal films. Strong bonds enhance durability.

Metalizing is one application that is used across all industries ranging from electronics to military and house equipment. In the manufacture of electronics, devices need to be protected from external interference. By depositing a suitable layer to cover the device, interference is reduced or eliminated. Interference is caused by several reasons such as electrical noise, electromagnetic interference, and radio frequency interference from external sources. Antennas and computers are among devices in need of protection.

Coatings metalized on a surface can serve to protect it too. If corrosion is likely to occur on a device because of the environments it is used in, depositing a layer of metal helps to stop the corrosion. Metallization is used to deposit a film of metal on the surface. Example of such an application is in the water, where the bottoms of ships are metalized to avoid corrosion by water.

Another function of metallization is that it enhances aesthetic value of a substrate surface. Plastic and wooden surfaces can be made to look beautiful and shiny like gold when coated with gold or gold-like metals. The shiny nature of silver makes surfaces it is deposited on to appear beautiful. Lastly, metallization increases durability of an object.
