Details About Earthquake Survival Kit

By Joanna Walsh

Earthquakes are natural disasters. They involve the sudden and violent shaking of the ground and may be extremely destructive. This is caused by movements in the crust of the earth or volcanic activity. It is recommended that people have an earthquake survival kit as part of their preparedness. This is particularly true for people who reside in regions where quakes are frequent.

Experts recommend that survivors of a major earthquake or other disaster be prepared to sustain themselves for at least a week. Self-sufficiency is important during these events because help and resources may be extremely limited. In the past, it was recommended that people had enough supplies to last for just three days.

Different supplies may be suggested when putting together kits for the car, office and home. At the home, a lot of water and food needs to be available. Food is best canned or in non-perishable packaging, as it will last longer. A can opener will also be needed to open this. Water is necessary to survival. The water supply should be enough for each person or pet to have one gallon of water every day.

Reliable shoes, rain gear and clothing are key. Sleeping bags and blankets should be packed as well. If a person takes medications or needs prescription eyeglasses, these should both be added to the kit. A first aid book and kit are to be included in case there are injuries sustained during or after the quake.

An extra set of car and house keys is recommend. It is also suggested that a flashlight and portable radio be packed, along with extra batteries. Toiletries, feminine hygiene products and toilet paper are also essentials. Cash and small change might be necessary as well. Any other necessities for babies or elderly should be included in these home kits.

There are other things worth including in these kits: hammer and nails, light sticks and candles, plastic utensils, purification kits for the water, fire extinguisher, knife or razor blades, rope and wire, ax and crowbar, a small tool kit, compass and map of the area, tarp, pet necessities, cheesecloth, and shovel. It may also be beneficial to have some entertainment items, particularly for families with kids. Stamps, paper and pens are also useful.

A car should have similar supplies as the home, but also water bottles, moist towelettes, walking shoes, gloves and resealable plastic bags. Preparation in the workplace means having a kit that has extra shoes that can be used for walking, orange juice and water to stay hydrated, dry foods like jerky, crackers and candy bars to stay nourished, and large and small plastic bags for multiple uses. Matches are also recommended.

It might be difficult to determine when and how severe these quakes will be. This is why preparation is important, especially for families. Severe quakes may lead to major destruction of structures and death or injury to people. These kits ensure that people have the basics for survival so that they can sustain themselves until professional help is accessible. There are manufacturers who sell kits that include basic supplies and necessities.
