Understanding How Sod Installation Is Done

By Ruth Cooper

Basically, sod is just grass. The fact that it is not grown on grass is the main difference. The growing of sod is done on specific farms by farmers who are specialized. Specific farm equipment is normally used to harvest turf whenever it is ready. The equipment used normally cut sod into standardized regular sizes or squares. From there, they are rolled and transported to intended market for sale. Sod installation is done after that.

Fully grown and harvested sods are typically used for lawns, golf courses and sports stadiums. Some of it is sold to landscapers or home builders to be used in residential projects. Turf establishes a lawn quickly thus avoiding soil erosion. They can also use it to repair areas that erosion has already occurred or areas that have damaged lawn due to sporting activities such as sports fields.

The process through which turf is laid in required places is known as installation. A lot of concentration, time and focus are required. There are some factors that one has to put under consideration before getting a place to buy or put sod. One of these factors include knowing the amount of turf required before buying it. This will only be achieved if an individual measures the region where the product needs to be placed.

It is also very paramount to determine the type of grass. This can be done by testing the soil around the area. Doing that ensures that the soil matches with sods. One is also advised to take note of other issues that may hinder performance when turf is installed. The time to carry on this process is also a factor. This determines the time when to buy.

The installation of turf involves various steps. First one needs to prepare the soil. This has to done before buying the turf since it has a short life shelf and one has to install it immediately. Site preparation involves removal of weeds and debris. One has to also kill the existing lawn. This is to ensure it does not compete with the installed sod.

The best place for setting up the turf is along the longest straight lines. Straight lines can be found along sidewalks and driveways. Stretching of the product so as to prevent gaps should be avoided. Edges should be pushed against each other. There should be staggered turf joined in each row. A large knife or a machete may be used during trimming. Regular use of blunt objects destroys the grass.

It is recommended that sods are supposed to be watered immediately after the installation. Watering the soils makes it wet and thus bond with grass firmly. To keep the soils moist, one has to water weekly continuously. That will maintain soft underfoot. Oozing is discouraged hence one is supposed to be careful.

Frequent maintenance care is required after the installation. The product is expected to be fertilized and mowed. Pests should also be controlled and done or conducted by recommended persons. Weeds also need to be controlled or may cause injury to newly placed sd. All this is to ensure that the grass stays healthy.
