Basic Information On Cargo Elevator

By Douglas Ellis

In buildings where a lot of cargo and goods need to be ferried up and down in elevators, special elevators are usually integrated into them to serve this purpose exclusively. The name used for elevators used for moving goods only is cargo elevator. Other names include freight elevators, goods lifts, and service elevators. The term goods lifts is more commonly used in the UK while the other names are more common in the United States.

Generally, these elevators have a notice written on the doors or near the entrances to indicate to passengers that they are meant for goods only. As such, people are not allowed to ride in them. Although passengers are not allowed to use these elevators, it is not necessarily illegal to do so. Some elevators have also been designed with inconspicuous risers so that they can serve dual purposes. That means they can be used to ferry goods as well as passengers.

These model of elevators are several times bigger in size and capacity that the traditional passenger models. The small versions range in capacity from 2300 to 4500 kgs. The largest models can ferry cargos that exceed ten thousand kgs in weight. Door operation is often manual with interiors of the doors having rugged finishes. Damage is often minimized by the manually-operated doors and rough interiors.

Different models of these appliances have different types of door configurations. Small versions usually have center-opening doors or two sliding telescopic doors. In large models, the number of sliding telescopic doors included may range from three and sometimes reach seven or more. Those that transport vehicles can have more than seven doors in some cases.

The number of doors is often highly dependent on the capacity of the structure. Similarly, the size depends on capacity. Those with larger capacities are often very large in size. The size ranges from a few square meters to hundreds of square meters. The size is also dependent on the type of goods the vessel is meant to ferry.

Various types of freight elevators are in existence. Some of them include traction elevators and hydraulic freight elevators. Suitability of either lift to specific purposes varies. Tractions elevators offer more advantage in energy efficiency than the hydraulic variety. The design followed in constructing them permits them to handle rigors of bulky loads.

Goods lifts exist in various classes. The classes include Class B, C1, C2, C3, and A. Every class is specific in the load capacity and size it can handle. Capacity in Class A is relatively high, but weights must be evenly distributed on the floor. That makes it necessary to keep the weight of any single item below 25 percent of the total capacity. Cargos can be handled onboard using hand trucks or manual means.

Class B freight elevators are meant primarily for moving automobile trucks and other forms of vehicles to the specified capacity. Class C1 have higher capacities and allow cargo handling by means of four-wheeled vehicles. In all models, capacity must never be exceeded for safety reasons.
