Modern Kitchen Renovation

By Loreley G. Weidner

When it comes to designing and decorating a home, every little section of it is equally important - each room must have its own unique flavour which will separate it from the rest, but will still fit with your theme. While both the living room and the bedrooms get plenty of attention, it is actually the kitchen that gives you loads of creative freedom. So if you are not happy with the look and feel of your current kitchen you should seriously think about Kitchen Renovation. Custom renovation is the is the 'full throttle' version of things and you will get the entire thing here as you can change pretty much every aspect of your kitchen and even bring down a wall or two (if your home permits that) to add more space as well.

Knock down a wall or two: The most obvious place to start with any tiny kitchen, and easily the most satisfying... Some walls will have load bearing properties and you'll need to ask your builder about what's possible, but even if you can't take an entire wall out there's often still an opportunity to slice out a pretty big chunk of wall around the load bearing bits to achieve the same effect. Knocking open a galley kitchen to turn it into an 'L' shaped kitchen, for example (and maybe sticking an island bench in) is usually the biggest and best thing you can do with a light-starved, claustrophobic old kitchen.

Remove doors: Surprising how often we see doors that open into small kitchens, eating up valuable space. You can take most doors off in about three minutes with a screwdriver and someone else to help you hold the door. If you'd prefer not to do that, a sliding or pocket door - or at least one that opens outwards - will be a better choice.

Use freestanding cabinetry: This works for the same reason that open faced wall cabinets do. Freestanding cabinetry's basically cabinets that don't have kickboards - and they give the impression of more space at floor level. Think carefully about task lighting: One of the problems with small kitchen spaces is that you're going to have a lot of shadows going everywhere.

Smaller, shallower or 'open' overhead cabinets: Overhead cabinets usually sit at around eye level for most of us, so they tend to be right in your face when you're in a small kitchen. Shrinking them upwards (i.e. making some more room between the bench and the bottom of the cabinets) will help to make your small kitchen feel a bit more spacious. The same can be said of making them slightly shallower, so that they don't jut out quite as much from the wall. Likewise, leaving them 'open' (i.e. without a door) or using see-through doors can also give the impression of a bit more space.
